Audi to build new plant in Mexico

September 5, 2012

Unlike rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi doesn’t have a production facility in the Americas. That’s set to change when the company breaks ground on a new facility in the Mexican state of Puebla. On September 5, Audi AG’s board of directors announced the project, choosing a site in San José Chiapa for construction.

According to Audi’s chairman of the board Rupert Stadler, the site “meets various key requirements of our global growth strategy and we can step up our activities in American markets.” Stadler also said the location is deemed as an ideal base from which to supply international markets. Frank Dreves, Audi board member for production, added, “the new plant in San José Chiapa will be the most modern in the Audi production network for its efficient use of resources and production methods.”

Audi is set to begin production at the plant in 2016, assembling a successor to the current Q5 crossover utility.
