June 20, 2012

This week, GM announced that it now boasts a total of 100 facilities worldwide that contribute no waste to landfill sites. The latest facility is a parts distribution center, located in Lansing, Mich.

For the last 15 years, the General has been actively tracking its waste and today, the company says that all of its facilities, worldwide recycle and reuse more than 90 per cent of the waste they generate.

Such recycling methods employed, include using scrap cardboard to make sound deadening materials for vehicles, while others include material from old tires used to make aerodynamic aids, such as air deflectors for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Since 1997, GM says that it has reduced total waste output by at least 43 per cent.

“Our landfill-free program continues to strengthen our business by creating efficiencies, generating revenue and inspiring innovation with products made from recycled content,” remarked Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability and Global regulatory affairs. “It’s a mission that’s integrated within our business processes. Everyone here plays a role in its success.”
