When it was unveiled at the Canadian International Auto Show back in February, the Scion FR-S was without question, one of the undisputed stars of the event. As both consumers and dealers gear up for the arrival of this new lightweight rear-drive sports coupe, Scion Canada has released pricing details on the car.
The base Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is $25,990 when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox, while cars featuring the six-speed automatic with paddle shift controls will start at $27,110.
It’s been a long time since the Toyota group offered a true, lightweight rear-drive coupe and perhaps not surprisingly there’s a strong lineage between this car and the 1983-87 Corolla GT, better known by its chassis code AE86 or Hachi-Roku in Japanese. In fact the FR-S carries stylized “86” emblems on its front fenders as a homage to the old rear-drive Toyota.
Powered by a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine delivering 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, plus featuring a chassis optimized for balance and fully independent suspension, the FR-S promises to deliver the same kind of fun to drive characteristics as its illustrious forebear, which has now achieved cult status. It will no doubt prove to be a great showroom traffic generator and image standard-bearer for the Scion brand in Canada.
