Used vehicle prices in Canada are falling, but a growing supply of newer models is making those declines harder to spot in the national average.
According to Clutch’s September 2026 Used Car Pricing Report, released Oct. 27, the average used vehicle sold for $33,917, up 0.5 per cent from August but down 0.4 per cent from September 2025.
However, when comparing the same models at the same vehicle age, prices were 1.8 per cent lower year over year. The report found that comparable vehicles have been selling for less than a year earlier every month since March.
The difference reflects a changing mix of used vehicles entering the market. Vehicles two years old or newer accounted for 33.1 per cent of September sales, up from 28.4 per cent a year earlier. These newer, typically higher-priced vehicles are helping keep the overall average elevated.
Regional differences were also apparent. British Columbia recorded the highest average used vehicle price at $37,824, up 1.0 per cent year over year. Ontario, meanwhile, saw prices decline 1.6 per cent.
By vehicle type, SUV prices fell 2.0 per cent nationally, while passenger car prices increased 1.0 per cent. Ontario recorded the largest regional SUV decline at 3.9 per cent.
Affordability improvements were more noticeable at the lower end of the market. The cheapest 10 per cent of used vehicles sold for 3.2 per cent less than a year earlier, while the median price declined 1.3 per cent.
The report analyzed Canadian used vehicle sales involving models from 2016 onward with fewer than 200,000 kilometres.
