Government invests millions in Linamar to speed up green tech in auto

The federal government recently announced an investment of up to $169.4 million in Linamar Corporation through the Strategic Innovation Fund to help speed up the development of green technologies in the automotive sector.

The announcement, made by François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, highlighted that the funding specifically supports Linamar’s Innovation Driving Green Technology Project. Under that project, green technologies include electric vehicle parts manufacturing and semiconductor packaging methods for EV batteries.

“Linamar’s groundbreaking project will drive innovation in EV parts and semiconductor manufacturing,” said Champagne in a statement. “It’s a win for the economy, the environment and Canadian jobs, cementing our country’s position as a leader in the EV supply chain.”

Linamar wants to broaden its portfolio of electrified products that reduce overall emissions, while remaining flexible to the needs of the end market. The project will be implemented at its Ontario facilities in Guelph, Salford, Welland, and Windsor. A new semiconductor packaging method will need to be developed to boost EV range and efficiency, while also reducing the time for a full charge.

“We are seeing a great deal of opportunity in our market across a broad range of technologies,” said Jim Jarrell, CEO and President of Linamar, in a statement. “(The) announcement helps ensure we maximize that opportunity for our employees and our community and is a great signal for the future of the automotive manufacturing sector in Ontario.”
