The Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario (MVRO) recently released a statement on the province’s push for bail reform, highlighting their support in keeping up the pressure on the federal government to enact tougher measures for car thieves.
In a statement, the MVRO said it was grateful to Solicitor General Michael Kerzner and Associate Minister of Auto Theft and Bail Reform, Graham McGregor, for this work. They also underlined their support for a call for tougher penalties that include, among other things, requiring ankle monitors as a condition of bail for serious crimes.
Support was also noted for removing the option of bail for people charged with murder, terrorism, human trafficking, intimate partner violence, drug trafficking, criminal possession (or use of restricted or prohibited firearms), and robbery. And restoring mandatory minimum sentencing for serious crimes.
“We call on the federal government to enact these measures quickly and help put Ontario’s auto theft crisis in the rear-view mirror,” said Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations at the MVRO, in a statement. “There is no time to waste.”
