The Minister of Transport and Québec Lieutenant, Pablo Rodriguez, recently announced the construction of a new $29 million laboratory meant to expand the Motor Vehicle Test Centre’s capacity.
“These investments at the Motor Vehicle Test Centre will transform it into a state-of-the-art facility, among the most advanced in the world,” said Rodriguez in a news release. “The Motor Vehicle Test Centre is a key part of the local automotive industry and will continue to drive innovation and safety for Canadians on our roads.”
Transport Canada conducts tests on new vehicles and child restraint systems that are produced or imported for sale into the country, to ensure they meet Canadian standards. It does the testing at the Motor Vehicle Test Centre, located in Blainville, Québec.
The new laboratory is meant to accommodate larger vehicles, such as electric buses and heavy trucks. It will add more than 4,400 square metres to the existing 11,300 square metres of laboratory space at the current facility.
The Motor Vehicle Test Centre site is 546 hectares, and that includes 25 kilometres of specialized test tracks. It is owned by Transport Canada and operated by PMG Technologies.
