FortisBC surpasses 50K public EV charging stations

FortisBC announced that its network of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations has surpassed 50,000 units. The company owns and operates 42 direct charge fast charging stations at 22 sites across its service area in British Columbia’s Southern Interior.

It launched its first public charging station in 2018, and last year drivers charged up 38 per cent more than in 2022. The company said its network connects “more than 1,000 kilometres of highway between the 20 communities” that feature its fast chargers.

“Our charging stations provide quick, convenient and reliable EV charging,” said Dawn Mehrer, Vice President of Corporate Services and Technology. “As an energy solutions provider, we’re continuing to explore innovative ways to improve our EV charging network so that we can meet the growing needs of drivers in this region.”

Megan Lohmann, Deputy Executive Director of the Community Energy Association (CEA), said in a news release that there was a local accelerated adoption of EVs because FortisBC demonstrated early leadership in the EV infrastructure space within B.C.’s Southern Interior. She also said it helped boost new opportunities for tourism and economic development in the region.

“CEA applauds this significant milestone reached, and the contribution FortisBC has made providing low carbon solutions for transportation in the region,” said Lohmann in a statement.
