Canadian provinces see significant growth in new light vehicle sales in January

Dealers may be interested to learn that all Canadian provinces saw significant growth in new light vehicle sales last month, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultant’s latest update on the market.

“The provinces all saw a strong start to the year with new light vehicle sales up across the board,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC, in a statement. “Seven of the 10 provinces pulled ahead of their pre-pandemic sales volumes from January 2019.”

Growth in percentage terms was led by Nova Scotia and PEI in January 2024, which saw the provinces up an estimated 30.8% and 30.6%, respectively. To the west, Alberta experienced a sales increase of 9.4%, although it was under the national average and was the only province to see a single digit increase for that period.

Québec enjoyed the addition of “significant volume” at just under 5,000 units, while Ontario had a similar experience after adding approximately 4,500 units to its total sales volume. However, it is also worth noting that Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia remained behind pre-pandemic results.

As for total new light vehicle sales for January 2024 among reporting OEMs, DAC said there was an increase of 14.9% compared to January 2023 — up from 98,000 units to an estimated 113,000 units.
