Ford F-series tops Q1 best-selling vehicle in Canada by 3 units

The Ford F-series remains the best-selling vehicle in Canada—by just a few units.

According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC), the Ford F-series has been the best-selling vehicle in the country on an annual basis since 2009, and the best-selling pickup for 56 years. However, supply challenges did impact the OEM and although it remains at the top of the charts for the first quarter of 2022—it is only by a “meager” three units, said DAC.

“Limited by semiconductor supply, the F-series saw a dramatic 39.8% decrease in sales in Q1 compared to an (only) 14.8% decline for the RAM with the two models at 18,218 and 18,215 units respectively,” said DAC.

On the truck side of the market, only two out of the top 10 models experienced sales increases: the Jeep Wrangler, now in seventh place thanks to a 47.0% increase; and the Nissan Qashqai, now in tenth place thanks to a  73.3% increase.

As for passenger cars, DAC said the Honda Civic remains at the top of the list, although the Hyundai Elantra claimed second place thanks to a 25.9% sales increase—putting it above the Toyota Corolla, which noted a 33.9% decrease. The Kia Soul was up 81.2% and claimed seventh place, while an 85.2% increase helped the Dodge Charger take ninth.

“Sales performance—amidst the widespread shortages—is driven in large part by available supply, creating an unusual and somewhat distorted sales picture,” ” said Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC.

The outlook for the second quarter of the year does not look positive, said DAC, adding that industry players will need to wait until the second half of 2022 to see if the market inches closer to “normality.”
