80% of Canadians support a vaccine passport

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise due to the Delta variant, 80% of Canadians support the introduction of a vaccine passport—compared to 59% in the United States, according to a Leger poll.

On September 1, Quebec imposed the introduction of a vaccine passport throughout the province. Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba are expected to follow suit in the coming weeks. The vaccine passport should not, at this point, impact access to services like car dealerships (sales and service), but more so restaurants and bars, for example.

Of the 80% of Canadians that support the vaccine passport, 56% strongly support it and 25% somewhat support it. Another 7% somewhat oppose it, and 13% strongly oppose it. In comparison, 36% of Americans strongly support the passport, 22% somewhat support it, 11% somewhat oppose it, and 31% strongly oppose it.

Many Canadians (38%) believe the worst of the COVID-19 crisis is behind us (down 25 percentage points since Leger’s July 6, 2021 survey), and 26% believe the worst is yet to come (up 15 percentage points). Another 17% believe we are currently living through the worst of it now (up eight percentage points).

The web survey was conducted from August 27-29, 2021 with 1,544 Canadians and 1,004 Americans, 18 years of age or older.
