Consultants Frost & Sullivan released a report examining gallium nitride (GaN) as the next technology of choice in the automotive industry. A by-product of smelting, GaN has a low extraction and refinement carbon footprint, high-efficiency and high-voltage capabilities, and is improving charging technology. As the amount of electronics in a vehicle grows each year and the industry experiences challenges due to the silicon chip shortage, GaN is being hailed as the next generation silicon. “It operates 100 times quicker than silicon, doesn’t lose energy and with its increased speed it is lighter, smaller, and cheaper,” Stephen Oliver, head of marketing at Navitas said in an interview.
