Shell to offset CO2 emissions from consumer fuel purchases

Shell said it will become the first retailer in the country to offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from consumer fuel purchases at its service stations across the nation.

In a news release, the company said the offsets cover all emissions from the production through to the use of the fuel. The project is part of its Drive Carbon Neutral program.

“Our customers have told us they want more ways to reduce their CO2 emissions and make a difference, but they don’t always know what actions to take,” said Andrea Brecka, General Manager of Retail at Shell Canada. “Our Drive Carbon Neutral program is designed to help make it simpler for Shell customers to address their carbon footprint today, by offsetting their fuel purchases.”

Shell customers can opt into the program starting November 12 at no additional cost when paying for fuel through Shell EasyPay — found within the company’s app. That special offer is only valid when using Shell EasyPay between Nov. 12- Dec. 31, 2020. After that, the opt-in cost for the program is two cents per litre.

Once a customer does this, Shell will then offset their emissions “by purchasing independently-verified carbon credits” from Canadian and international projects that aim to protect or restore natural landscapes.

The company sources credits from the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project in British Columbia, and will also purchase credits from global projects like the Cordillera Azul National Park Project in Peru and the Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project in Indonesia.
