British Columbia will receive a $380,000 investment towards the Corporation District of the Summerland to build 22 electric vehicle (EV) chargers, according to Natural Resources Canada.
Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, made the announcement on August 18 as part of the federal government’s goal of attaining a low-carbon future.
“We are providing greener options for Canadians to drive where they want to go,” said O’Regan. “This is how we get to net zero by 2050.”
The chargers will be divided into six EV fast chargers and 16 level 2 EV chargers, to be located at various public sites with the first one scheduled to open this fall.
The funding was provided through the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative (EVAFIDI) and the Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. It comes in addition to a $15,000 investment provided by the Government of British Columbia.
“Early in 2020, the District finalized its Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan,” said Toni Boot, Mayor of the District of Summerland. “This document provides a framework for our climate action work and demonstrates our commitment to reducing net emissions.”
