Stability for January auto sales

Canadian light vehicle sales were stable in January after the industry sold 109,616 units for the month — up 0.8% year-over-year, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC).

“Several provinces noted significant sales increases for the month, with New Brunswick leading the pack thanks to a 9.9% sales increase,” said DAC. “Sales decreases were recorded in Newfoundland and British Columbia at 4.0% and 10.1% respectively.”

Passenger car sales declined 17.2%, while light truck sales rose 6.7%. During this period, the Toyota Prius Liftback claimed tenth place among passenger cars, thanks to a 233.1% sales boost. The Kia Soul finished ninth due to a 47.3% sales increase. And the Hyundai Kona was ninth on the list for light trucks, thanks to a 36.3% sales increase.

Most passenger car segments experienced sales decreases — the one exception being the luxury sport category, which managed a sales increase of 18.6%. “On the other hand, a number of light truck segments noted increases led by the small pickup segment with a 27.3% sales increase for January,” said DAC.

Several OEM sales figures are estimated by DAC each month. These include: Audi, BMW, FCA, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Porsche, and Volkswagen. The official year-to-date figures are released quarterly.
