Bill 50 passes MPPs vote, moves to third round

Bill 50, which seeks to modernize the way dealers apply for permits and other vehicle-related information, was unanimously passed by Members of Provincial Parliament in Ontario.

“The Trillium Automobile Dealers Association is thrilled with Bill 50 passing Second Reading,” said Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations for TADA. “Having the Bill pass with all-party support shows it’s an issue everyone can get behind to modernize Ontario’s auto retail sector.”

Officially known as Bill 50: Cutting Red Tape for Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, the Private Member’s Bill was introduced by Mike Harris, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga. If passed, it will help eliminate the need for car dealers to physically transport paperwork to and from the licensing office by instead doing this work online. The work in question includes things like applying for permits, plates, sticker validations and used vehicle information.

“Here’s the bottom line,” MPP Harris said during the debate. “Moving the vehicle registration process online will make motor vehicle dealerships one stop shops, saving dealers and customers time and money.”

The Bill has now been referred to the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly. It must pass a third reading before it can become law.
