Celebrating change

A lot has happened since we published the first issue of Canadian auto dealer 10 years ago.

In November 2005, Opposition Leader Stephen Harper introduced a motion of no confidence in the Liberal government led by Paul Martin, leading to the dissolution of the 38th Canadian Parliament. Ten years later, voters ousted Harper and he resigned as leader of the Conservative Party.

In the sporting world, Tiger Woods reigned supreme in 2005, winning the Masters Golf Tournament and the British Open. At the time, he was the world’s top-ranked golfer. Today, he’s ranked 384th.

When we celebrate anniversaries like the 10th anniversary of publishing Canadian auto dealer, the words of the great English poet Geoffrey Chaucer really ring true: “Time and Tide wait for no man.”

The world indeed does roll right along. Since 2005, more than 3,650 days have slipped behind us, and more than 87,000 hours. Over those days, weeks, months and years, the automotive industry, and the world of automotive retail has undergone profound change.

It’s been a great 10 years. But it’s only the start. The people on the Canadian auto dealer team are not the type to rest on their laurels.

We celebrate the decade that was in our industry, in this special issue of Canadian auto dealer. We invited our columnists and contributors to share their stories, and for a brief moment we pause to take stock of the prominent role that this magazine played — and continues to play — as a trusted guide and companion to the times we live in.

As the weeks and months unfold ahead of us, and we navigate through cyber risk, automated vehicles, emissions scandals, evolving dealership models, and of course, incredible new technologies — our goal is to ensure that Canadian auto dealer continues to be your go to source to stay informed in print, digital and in whatever form of communication comes next.

This anniversary also gives us time to offer heartfelt thanks to the editors (most notably founding editor, Gerry Malloy) and designers, the sales and publishing teams, the columnists and writers, illustrators, photographers, web designers, email deployment teams — and increasingly the videographers and video editors — who have done their very best over the years to bring the magazine to life for our readers.

Our readers also deserve our profound thanks, for continuing to read and be inspired by the publication, for always providing feedback on what they like and don’t like, and for challenging us to always push harder to meet their ever-evolving information needs.

We also owe a deep thanks to the industry associations, and the advertisers who have also been big backers of our publications over the years. Without their support, none of this would be possible.
