WHY INDIFFERENCE TO A NEW CONCEPT OR PROCESS IS OFTEN DUE TO A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING IT
This may surprise you but until recently I had never played golf. Some friends convinced me to play and I have to admit I was completely out of my comfort zone. I was feeling embarrassed with my lack of knowledge about the game and did not want to ask questions since I knew they were so elementary and basic.
Let’s switch the topic from golf to social media. It seems everyone is using social media and you find it hard to understand the purpose or attraction? Why in the world would you want to take part, it’s a complete waste of time, right? Who cares if a stranger or a friend is taking their dog for a walk, shopping at the grocery store, or playing Angry Birds?
Could it be you feel this way because you don’t really understand social media? Could it be the same thing as my feeling about golf, since I had never played, and it made me feel stupid.
Humans like to feel like we belong, we are accepted, that we are the alpha when it comes to intelligence. So when we don’t understand something or fear something it is natural to discount it or act like we’re above it. Humans also normally don’t like change since “change is synonymous with risk” and most like to be in “the comfort zone.”
We must first understand human behaviour and from that develop a marketing or sales strategy that will guarantee success. I am going to explain some very important things to consider when it comes to social media.
WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS AND WHY YOU NEED IT
In essence, social media is like a party or a club, where you can hang out with old friends and meet new ones. It’s a place where ideas can be discussed, stories shared, strategies implemented and where we can provide support for each other. It’s a social community except that it’s online and so is accessible to you in the palm of your hand, anytime, anywhere. Social media is everything that life and relationships have been since the dawn of time.
If your company depends on customers of any kind then I advise you — do your part and establish both yourself and your company in as many people’s minds as possible! It can mean the difference between being a profitable organization or the alternative. Everyone has a voice and a network, and you should use it since the residual effect will benefit you even if you don’t think you are in sales or customer service.
COMMIT TO SOMETHING NEW
There’s no time for excuses about why you can’t use social media. That’s just a cover for something you don’t understand or fear — just like me with golf.
The best advice is to pretend you are at a social event and act the same way. When something comes to mind post it. When someone says something and it makes you think — reply to it. Always be positive and supportive and you will be popular.
Helpful Tip: On Facebook every morning post something like this… “Good morning my friends, I am at the dealership all day today and if you need any assistance in sales, service or want to bet on who will win tonight’s hockey game 🙂 call me on my cell xxx-xxx-xxxx. Have a great day!”
