Improved MyFord Touch and SYNC systems on the way

Responding to criticism that its MyFord Touch info entertainment system, introduced on the 2011 Edge Crossover Utility, was complicated, slow and not user friendly, Ford Motor Company has been taking steps to remedy the situation.

As a result, beginning on 2013 model year vehicles, it will introduce an improved version of the program that will feature simpler graphics, easier to use controls and faster response by touching the screen. In addition, Ford says it will provide customers with existing MyFord Touch systems (currently fitted to the 2011-2012 Edge, Explorer and 2012 Focus as well as the 2011-12 Lincoln MKX) a complimentary upgrade via a USB flash drive, that will enable them to upload the new software at their convenience. The flash drives are due to be mailed out, starting next year.

According to Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally, part of the problem with the current MyFord Touch system was inconsistent quality control during the development phase; steps have now been taken to ensure more stringent standards are met.

Besides the upgrades to MyFord Touch, improvements to Ford’s SYNC voice command system are also in the works. Features such as better voice recognition, simpler command structures have been incorporated, as well as better smart phone compatibility, including improved Bluetooth wireless connections and better noise and cancellation echoes.

Despite considerable criticism since being launched (Consumer Reports magazine dropped the 2011 Edge from its “recommended” list largely due to the issues with MyFord Touch), Mulally believes that the system and SYNC are very much the way forward. “They have their fans,” he said, as well as stating that “some 50 per cent” of buyers consider them a factor when purchasing a vehicle and of those that use the systems regularly, some 70 per cent recommend them to their friends.

Ford currently has plans to have MyFord Touch installed in all Lincolns by 2015 as well as some 80 per cent of Ford branded vehicles in the U.S. The upgraded system will initially be available on the 2013 Ford Escape, Flex and Taurus, with other models to follow.
