Elantra is Canada’s best selling car

For the second-month in a row, Hyundai’s high-styled new Elantra was the top-selling car model in Canada in February, while Volkswagen’s new Jetta continued its advance on the sales charts. Ford’s F-150 remained atop the truck charts with the Dodge Caravan in second spot.

In first place for both the month and the year to date, Elantra’s sales are running more than 50 percent ahead of the second-place Toyota Corolla’s, through February.

Following a disastrous January, sales of the Honda Civic rebounded sufficiently to reclaim second place for the month, but they remain behind Elantra’s and Corolla’s, year-to-date.

The Mazda3 ranked fourth in sales and the Chevrolet Cruze was fifth, both for the month and the year to date.

With the exception of the Elantra (+63.4%), Jetta (+126%) and Cruze (+264% from Cobalt sales) sales for all other cars in the Top Ten were down in February, compared to the same month last year.

Reflective of that fact, sales of compact (-4.0%), sub-compact (-15.0%) and mid-size cars (-22.2%) are all down year-to-date – in spite of substantial increases in gasoline prices through the period.

With the exception of the Ford Fusion (in tenth place), the top-ten selling cars are all compacts or sub-compacts.

On the truck side, the three top-sellers, year-to-date – Ford F-Series (-1.8%), Dodge Caravan (+24.7%) and Dodge Ram (+34.4%) – all outsold the best-selling passenger car.

Compact luxury SUVs (+37.0%) lead the advance on the truck side, followed by small vans (+29.2%), large vans (+15.2%), compact SUVs (+8.2%), and intermediate SUVs and large pickups (both +7.2%).

The only truck segments to lag last year in sales, year-to-date, are small pickups (-30.7%) and large SUVs (-28.1%).
