Toyota top earner for 2020, with more than $38M per hour

The top automaker in the world is earning more than $38.8 million every hour, according to Uswitch, which looked at the annual revenue for each car brand between 2016-2020 and considered the number of sales made last year.

For dealers interested in knowing how much their OEM, or competing automakers pull in on average in total annual revenue based on the report, Toyota (with Lexus combined) was among the top three highest-earning car brands in 2020—and is actually the number one brand for that year, with an annual revenue of £201 billion (CA$339.25 billion).

Its hourly revenue was £23 million (CA$38.82 million), its revenue per minute was £382,996 (CA$646,430), and its revenue per second was £6,383 or CA$10,773. All are approximations in Canadian dollars.

The global pandemic meant that the automotive industry had a turbulent year as less people were purchasing new cars,” said Uswitch car insurance expert, Florence Codjoe. “However, demand for cars quickly returned as the world began to open back up.”

Volkswagen (including Audi, Škoda, Porsche, SEAT, Bentley, and Lamborghini) slots number two with an annual revenue of £186 billion (CA$313.94 billion), and generates “a significant amount of money from its commercial vans and other vehicles, as well as motorcycles under the Ducati brand.”

The company pulls in an hourly revenue of £21.2 million (CA$35.78), £354,126 each minute (CA$597,702), and £5,902 every second (CA$9,961).

Daimler (Mercedes-Benz and other smaller brands such as Smart Automobile) slots number three and is worth £129 billion (CA$217.73 billion) a year. It also generates £14.7 million (CA$24.81 million) an hour, just under a quarter of a million each minute (in pounds), and more than £4,000 (CA$6751) a second.

For the highest earning car brands from 2016-2020, Volkswagen is number one (per year—CA$325.08 billion), followed by Toyota (CA$321.87 billion) and Daimler (CA$227.69 billion).

The world’s top three selling car brands for 2020 are Toyota, with 8.7 million in annual sales, 724,347 in monthly sales, and 166,708 in weekly sales.

“The world’s vehicle manufacturers are amongst some of the biggest companies in the world. After all, we rely on our cars a lot, from getting us to work, taking us on holiday or even just driving to do the weekly shop,” said Codjoe. “Therefore, it’s no surprise that the world’s biggest car brands make some serious money, with an estimated 56 million vehicles sold globally last year, a total led by Toyota that sold 8.7 million vehicles alone.”

Volkswagen is in second place with 5.3 million annual sales, 444,000 in monthly sales, and 102,186 in monthly sales.

And Honda is in third place, with 4.8 million annual sales, 399,167 monthly sales, and 91,868 weekly sales.
