Ontario often sets the tone for Canadian new light vehicle sales each month, due to high volume, but in February 2021 DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC) said the tone was “decidedly sour.”
“With sales down 20.9% for the month, Ontario lost an estimated 11,434 units of sales, by far the greatest drop of any province,” said DAC. “At the other end of the spectrum, Quebec noted an estimated sales increase of 8.6% for the month, adding well over two thousand units to national sales.”
In Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, smaller increases were noted at 2.7% and 1.4%, respectively. All other provinces experienced sales decreases in February, amounting to an overall monthly estimated sales total of 112,654 units across the country. That figure is down 9.9% when compared to 2020.
“Ontario’s performance in the face of local COVID related measures continued to sap strength away from the national market,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC. “Any true recovery will require a return to form for Canada’s heavyweight province.”
