Toyota releases environmental report on key efforts

In mid-December, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) released its 2020 North American Environmental Report, which focuses on carbon, water, materials, biodiversity and outreach.

The report indicates that the OEM was able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by nine per cent in 2020, compared to fiscal year 2019, which they say is attributed to improvements in energy efficiency, investments in renewable energy, and changes in production volumes and model mix.

“At Toyota, it’s imperative that we do our part to offer more sustainable solutions to our customers, while identifying ways to reduce our own impact on the environment — from infrastructure, to manufacturing, and beyond,” said Stephen Beatty, Vice President of Corporate at Toyota Canada, adding that “It’s not enough to talk the talk” but that they also need to “walk the walk.”

TMMC also said its team members developed a method that involves recycling plastic resin (TSOP-7) waste so it can be used to mold front- and rear-bumpers. They do this by melting the plastic and then returning it to its original form — without degrading the quality.

“This process, which is regenerative by design, demonstrates a circular economy and has ensured that 100 per cent of the scrap bumper material that leaves TMMC comes back to TMMC,” said Toyota Canada in its news release.

The OEM has also added new electrified models to its lineup, including the RAV4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid, Sienna Hybrid, and Venza Hybrid, which is part of the automaker’s goal to offer an electrified version of every model in the lineup by around 2025.
