The federal government is investing $100,000 in Ottawa River Energy Solutions to install 23 electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the Ottawa River Valley area, according to Natural Resources Canada.
The announcement made by Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, aims to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) through the Pembroke-based energy and technology service provider.
“The addition of these chargers will help cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions, increase convenience and reduce range anxiety for users travelling along the Highway 417, 17 and 60 corridors,” said Justin Allen, President of Ottawa River Energy Solutions.
“The project will also provide improved economic development opportunities for the municipalities as a result of a ‘trickle down’ effect among local businesses due to the strategic placement near areas of commerce and public spaces,” he added.
The funding provided by the federal government will come from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which aims to have all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada by 2040 as ZEVs.
The federal government’s recent Fall Economic Statement also aims to accelerate ZEV uptake by providing an additional $150 million over three years starting next year for ZEV infrastructure. And there will be an additional $287 million in funding for vehicle purchase incentives to make ZEVs more affordable.
“We are providing greener options for Canadians to get where they need to go,” Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “This is how we get to net zero by 2050.”
