2021 virtual Montreal auto show canceled

The Montreal International Auto Show (MIAS)’s virtual edition has been canceled. The online event was set to take place between January 20 to 24, 2021, and was meant to replace the in-person show typically held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal from January 15 to 24, 2021.

“We have been working hand in hand for several weeks with the OEM’s and the virtual platform supplier, to create a model event and implement a state-of-the-art project, which would have been a first of its kind in North America. All efforts were put in place to ensure a good participation, and a unique customer journey for a virtual automotive event,” said Luis Pereira, Executive Director of the MIAS.

Pereira said they took the initiative to collaborate with other Canadian shows to reproduce the same virtual experience across Canada using the platform they had in mind, and thus limiting costs in terms of content produced for exhibitors.

“The pandemic has certainly not spared the automotive industry, the non-participation of a large number of car manufacturers in this edition, despite our best efforts; we are faced with the tough decision to cancel the virtual show,” said Denis Dessureault, Executive Vice-President.

He said they are aware that OEMs are going through a difficult period due to the pandemic and the financial consequences resulting from the crisis, and so automakers want to limit their expenses.

“One thing is certain: the auto show industry will not disappear in favour of the Internet. The manufacturers will be presented at the next edition at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, to the entertainment of attendees,” said Dessureault.

The MIAS team will continue to prepare for the in-person event that is set to return in 2022.
