Bill 50 could modernize vehicle registration process

Mike Harris, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, has introduced what is known as a Private Member’s Bill in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario — Bill 50: the Cutting Red Tape for Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2018.

The Bill seeks to amend the Highway Traffic Act and modernize Ontario’s vehicle registration process by allowing certain car dealers to apply for permits, number plates, sticker validations and used vehicle information online rather than physically transporting it to and from the licensing office.

“If passed, Bill 50 will be a game changer for Ontario’s auto retail sector. We live in the digital age and it’s time to harness technology to modernize the vehicle registration process,” said Susan Gubasta, President of the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (TADA), and President and CEO of Mississauga Toyota. “There’s no good reason why auto dealers must still register vehicles the same way we did when my dealership opened nearly 30 years ago.”

According to Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations, TADA, if the Bill is passed it will bring Ontario in-line with jurisdictions like Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, New York State, Michigan.

Quebec has allowed dealers to conduct in-dealership vehicle registrations since 2002, and the state of New York has been providing this service since the 1990s.
