Ontario Chamber of Commerce to support plan for Bill 2

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has officially adopted a resolution to support Bill 2: Cutting Red Tape for Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2018, which was previously known as Bill 3 and Bill 152 in previous sessions of Parliament.

The Bill, put forward by Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville and PC Deputy Leader, essentially amends the Highway Traffic Act, allowing certain car dealers to register and licence the vehicles they sell (permits, number plates and other things) through electronic means, from their dealership. This would effectively eliminate an outdated requirement to physically transport the paperwork back and forth from the licensing office.

“This initiative started in response to concerns by auto dealers in Brockville where Service Ontario delays were costing them time and money, while leaving customers frustrated,” said Clark. “Since then, dealers across Ontario have told me cutting this needless red tape will improve the customer experience and help grow this key sector of our economy.”

If passed, the Bill will help dealers save time and money, and allow consumers to drive their new vehicle off the lot within minutes of signing the contract.

Quebec has allowed dealers to register their vehicles since 2002, and provinces like New Brunswick, P.E.I, Newfoundland & Labrador, and U.S. states like New York and Michigan (among others), have similar programs.
