Unifor opens Ford talks amid industry uncertainty

Unifor will launch its 2026 Detroit Three contract negotiations with Ford Motor Co. on June 22, the union announced Monday, as Canada’s automotive sector continues to face what union leaders described as “unprecedented challenges.”

The union said it selected Ford as the lead company for this year’s pattern bargaining talks. Unifor represents approximately 5,000 workers at Ford of Canada facilities.

“Currently, the Canadian auto sector, and in turn our members and their families, face unprecedented challenges. Unifor firmly believes it is in the best interest of our members across the Detroit Three to work to establish the pattern agreement for 2026 auto bargaining with Ford Motor Company,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne in a statement.

Pattern bargaining traditionally establishes a framework agreement with one Detroit Three automaker that later guides negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis.

Unifor said its General Motors and Stellantis Master Bargaining Committees endorsed the decision to begin negotiations with Ford. Historically, Ford has frequently been selected by Unifor and its predecessor, the Canadian Auto Workers union, to establish the bargaining pattern for Detroit Three negotiations, according to the union.

The talks come as the Canadian auto industry continues to navigate trade tensions, shifting production strategies and broader economic uncertainty across North America.
