Hyundai Canada recently announced a $250,000 donation to the CHEO Foundation to help fight childhood cancers. The donation was made through its charitable foundation, Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
In a news release, the OEM described the CHEO as a leader in paediatric cancer care and research. Based in Ottawa, the research institute serves patients from across eastern and northern Ontario, western Quebec, and Nunavut. Its Hematology and Oncology program provides care for children and youth with blood and cancer disorders.
“We are incredibly grateful to Hyundai Hope on Wheels for this generous gift. Their support is a powerful investment in the future of paediatric cancer care,” said Steve Read, President and CEO of the CHEO Foundation, in a statement. “Partnerships like this one help make that possible — and bring renewed hope to families when they need it most.”
A handprint ceremony marked the announcement, which is a signature event of Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Children and families affected by cancer, including donors, researchers, and community supporters, are invited to leave their painted handprints on a Hyundai vehicle. The OEM said each print is a symbol of hope and resilience.
“As we continue our first year of Hyundai Hope on Wheels in Canada, it’s incredibly moving to see how each Handprint Ceremony brings communities together in support of children and families affected by cancer,” said Kirk Merrett, Hyundai Canada’s Director of Human Resources and Administration and the Hyundai Canada executive who administers Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
Merrett added that this event is “only the beginning of our commitment” as they help drive progress, “one handprint at a time.”
