The future of automotive may be defined by AI

The future of automotive will be defined by Artificial Intelligence. That is one of the takeaways that IDTechEx pulled from the CES 2024 conference, which took place from January 9-12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In a news release, IDTechEx pointed to how much AI has evolved — with things like OpenAI’s ChatGPT paving the way for what machines can do to replicate normal human conversations. At CES, they observed how AI’s evolution can contribute to the vehicle experience. As examples, IDTechEx highlighted that both Qualcomm and AWS (Amazon Web Services: a cloud computing company) had “demonstrator interfaces that had been trained on the vehicle’s owner manual.”

“This is an ideal first application as customers can ask about features on the vehicle and get an understandable explanation from the AI assistant,” said IDTechEx in its report. “For example, the driver could ask the assistant, ‘Why is the engine turning off when the car is stopped?’ and the assistant can explain that this is designed to save fuel and let the driver know how to turn it off if they desire.”

The company also sees AI assistants offered in the form of a subscription service. For example, the AWS AI assistant for vehicles is, as previously mentioned, a cloud service, which connects to AWS servers so that AI functionality can be performed. And Qualcomm’s latest chips feature built-in AI accelerators, which means the vehicle benefits from some AI even when offline.

AI is already anticipated to have an impact on the automotive sector, although dealers may wish to remain informed on its progress as it is likely to enter their domain at some point — perhaps in a future much sooner than imagined.
