Hydro Ottawa launches funding initiative to boost EV infrastructure

Hydro Ottawa launched a funding initiative that will allow the company to distribute funding to eligible applicants for electric vehicle charging stations within the city of Ottawa.

The initiative aims to provide up to 50 per cent of project costs for the purchase and installation of EV charging stations for multi-unit residential buildings, light-duty fleets, workplaces, on-street parking, and public places such as retail, restaurants, service stations, and medical offices.

“As part of Canada’s mandate to get to net-zero emissions by 2050, the Government of Canada has set a mandatory target for all new light-duty vehicles and passenger trucks to be zero-emission by 2035,” said Hydro Ottawa in its news release. “One of the key barriers to zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption is the lack of charging stations.”

The goal of the initiative is to break down barriers related to the adoption of EVs by expanding the infrastructure.

The initiative may prove especially useful for garage orphans in multi-unit residential buildings that do not have close or easy access to an EV charging station, making it more difficult for these consumers to charge their vehicle than someone that can plug it in at their private residence.

Private residences, regardless if a business is registered at the location, are not eligible for the funding.
