Quebec’s Hilo to launch EV smart charging pilot in November

Hydro-Québec subsidiary Hilo will launch a pilot project that will run from Nov. 1, 2021 until Oct. 31, 2022 and see electric vehicle driver participants test and assess its new smart charging solution.

According to the company, that solution uses one of Quebec’s best-selling charging stations: the EVduty (EV30), which is made in the province by Elmec—a designer and manufacturer of charging stations in Shawinigan, Que. The official launch of the charger is scheduled for 2022, and is considered to be step one of a larger plan by Hilo.

“One day, we will provide a turnkey solution that enables your electric vehicle to power your home in the case of an outage,” said Sébastien Fournier, President and CEO of Hilo. “You will also be able to store the energy generated by your home in your vehicle’s battery by using our mobile app.”

The charging solution relies on a device that, with the customer’s consent, allows Hilo to program the charging times and prevent too many drivers from charging their EVs at the same time.

When the charging service is officially launched in 2022, Hilo said it will be compatible with most charging stations.
