DAC reveals provincial sales for April, QC decline notable

Quebec experienced the steepest decline in provincial sales in April, in terms of percent change, with an estimated 84.6% decrease, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC).

In its latest update on provincial sales, DAC said new light vehicle sales in Canada fell an estimated 74.6% in April, after an estimated 48.3% sales decrease in March. And although nearly all provinces experienced sales decreasing by more than half, Quebec’s case was notable.

“Quebec was among the more stringent in closing dealerships and has been hit hardest by the virus in terms of total case count, while British Columbia has thus far managed a less extensive outbreak,” said DAC.

Sales in Prince Edward Island and B.C. declined 57.2% and 57.9%, respectively. DAC said the variety in April sales performance was influenced by provincial government measures put in place in response to the current pandemic — in addition to the severity of the situation locally.

“Much of Canada has begun the slow trek to re-opening and lifting the more aggressive pandemic measures,” said DAC. “However, the situation remains in flux and significant regional variations are expected to continue in the coming months.”
