SUVs and electric cars rated highest among the vehicle categories that Canadians would like to receive as gifts during the holiday season, according to a news report from Desrosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. (DAC).
“For a number of years, DAC has surveyed consumers about what type of vehicle they would like to receive as a gift from Santa for the holiday season,” said DAC. “SUVs were unsurprisingly the most popular option this year garnering 25.4 per cent of the overall responses” — although last year the category garnered 29.4 per cent of the responses.
The report also reveals that 22 per cent of Canadians would like to receive an electric vehicle from St. Nick this year — a notable increase with consumers, up from 15.6 per cent in 2018.
“Consumers in Quebec and British Columbia on average selected electric cars as their first choice with 31.5 per cent and 27.6 per cent of responses, overcoming the ever-popular SUVs,” said DAC.
Interest in EVs has increased with the level of education that consumers have from their schooling: 17.1 per cent have (at most) a high school education; 19.8 per cent have a college degree; and 26.4 per cent have a university degree.
In other categories, pickup trucks received 13.1 per cent of the responses (compared to 13 per cent in 2018), sedans 9.7 per cent, and 9.4 per cent of Canadians want exotic/sports cars. A smaller margin of shoppers, 6 per cent, are interested in small economy vehicles. And minivans came in last place again this year with 4.3 per cent of the overall responses.
