The Ontario government answered the demands of consumers to modernize the way they show their proof of auto insurance, allowing drivers to showcase either the paper pink slip or an electronic proof via smartphone or tablet.
The electronic proof holds the same value as the paper credentials, and the rule is already in effect. The move, which was hailed by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (TADA), is meant to make the insurance experience easier, and more convenient and modern for drivers in Ontario, as other provinces are already doing this.
“Being able to provide digital documents to today’s tech-savvy consumer is a baseline expectation of service we are thrilled to now be able to provide,” said Kim Donaldson, Vice-President, Ontario, Insurance Bureau of Canada. “This marks another step is making insurance easier and more accessible for Ontarians.”
TADA said drivers are better off because of the new rule, and that “In this advanced, technological age we live in, there is no good reason why drivers must carry a paper copy for proof of insurance. Allowing for electronic proof of auto insurance provides the opportunity for drivers to have a copy of their insurance before driving off the dealership lot in their new car.”
It’s also an opportunity for dealers who are responsible for getting insurance lined-up for vehicle deliveries. The electronic slip certain makes things more convenient, and it offers them the opportunity to further cut down on paper use.
