The University of Alberta has received $500,000 in funding for their project to pilot the enhanced privacy of connected vehicle communications. The funding was announced Monday by Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, on behalf of Transport Minister Marc Garneau.
“We are in the midst of fundamental changes in our transportation systems. Connected and automated vehicles are reshaping the sector, and University of Alberta experts are leading research into these technologies to build more sustainable and resilient communities,” said David Turpin, president and vice-chancellor at the University of Alberta.
Transport Canada has set aside $2.9 million in funding to help Canadian jurisdictions prepare for connected and automated vehicles. The program, to Advance Connectivity and Automation in the Transportation System, will support research, studies and technology demonstrations across Canada. Findings will be shared extensively to encourage innovation across the country.
“This research will allow our communities to be better prepared for connected and automated vehicle technology and will ultimately provide us with many opportunities to make our roads safer, reduce congestion, and benefit our local economy,” said Sohi.
