Remembering Capital Auto Group Founder Frank Howard

Frank Howard

Frank Howard, founder and president of Capital Auto Group and one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most influential auto retailers, died after a battle with cancer. He passed away December 4 surrounded by family.

He spent more than 50 years building a business that helped shape the province’s modern retail auto landscape. From a single dealership in St. John’s, he expanded Capital Auto Group into an operation with more than 500 employees representing 10 brands.

He later established The Howard Group, overseeing a significant real estate portfolio under Howard Properties. His contributions earned widespread recognition, including the CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and induction into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame.

His philanthropic work was equally central to his legacy. Howard was a major supporter of frontline organizations across the province, including the Health Care Foundation, Daffodil Place, Janeway Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and The Gathering Place. His approach to business was grounded in the belief that success carried an obligation to give back.

His career reflects the profound local impact a single dealer can have in a community. His growth of Capital Auto Group and his longstanding philanthropy underscore the role auto retailers play as economic anchors, employers and community leaders across Canada.

Howard is survived by his wife, Annette; his children, Jon (Kristy), Jordan, Mike (Maria) and Nick (Sukriti); and his grandchildren Logan, Madden, Molly and Roman. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
