Mazda Canada’s President and CEO David Klan will retire on October 1, paving the way for a woman to take the reins for the first time in the company’s history.

The incoming President and CEO is Amy Fleming, Senior Director and Chief Operating Officer. She joined Mazda Canada in 2006 and has been a member of the executive team for the past decade. She started her career in automotive over 30 years ago at a dealership in her hometown of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She then continued her automotive career in Ontario after graduating from her studies.

“Mazda in Canada has outstanding momentum and it’s a distinct privilege to hand over the reins to my chosen successor, Amy Fleming,” said Klan, the current president, in a statement. “Amy is an exceptional leader with unparalleled drive and dedication, and I’m confident she will continue to drive Mazda forward with vision and purpose.”

Fleming has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems. She is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University.

As for Klan, he is a 33-year veteran of Mazda and has held numerous executive positions globally since starting with the company in 1992. Among those positions, Klan has been Director of Marketing and Regional General Manager at Mazda North American Operations in the United States, and General Manager of Global Brand Marketing at Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan.

He returned to Canada in 2009 and led the OEM’s national sales, marketing, and regional operations as Senior Director. He then became President and CEO in 2019. “Every part of my journey at Mazda has been deeply rewarding, and it’s been a pleasure working with the best teams in the business,” said Klan.
