Used prices turn down in January

But still well above year-ago levels

For the first time since May, 2010, the ADESA Canada Used Vehicle Price Index turned downward in January, weakening by approximately 0.3pts from December, seasonally adjusted. However, given the gains made over the past nine months, January’s prices remained approximately 9 percent ($859/unit) above those for the same month in 2010.

In line with seasonal expectations, the number of sale units going through auction increased over December levels but that volume was down from January ’10 levels.

The full-size pickup segment was the only one that saw an increase in volume, January over January. In addition, it showed a 17-percent ($2,330) increase in resale prices.

Mid-compact segment prices were up 11% ($636) with single digit reduction in volume going through auction. Mid-size car and minivan segments both saw volume down approximately 33 percent, while resale prices strengthened by 14 percent ($1,078) / 11% ($664), respectively.

The mid-size SUV segment strengthened by approximately 8 percent ($987/unit) with approximately half the volume of units going through auction as compared to last January.
