As the impact of U.S. tariffs on the Canadian auto sector intensifies, Unifor has organized a rally in Brampton, Ontario, on Saturday, October 4 to call for stronger protections for Canadian workers in the automotive sector.

The event highlights the importance of preserving good-paying jobs in Ontario amid ongoing global competition and industry shifts. The rally activities begin at 12 p.m. with remarks at 1 p.m. The rally will take place on the Williams Parkway boulevard in front of the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant.

“The sector-by-sector attacks by President Trump keep coming but Canadians are resolved to fight for our jobs and our economy,” said Lana Payne, National President of Unifor, in a statement. “Now is the time to take action to protect workers from sustained U.S. targeting and build our own path forward.”

The rally is said to be family-friendly. It’s purposely set in front of the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant where retooling for next-generation electric and gas-powered Jeeps was paused in February following Trump’s announcement of a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian-built vehicles.

For auto dealers, the stakes are also significant. A stronger commitment to Canadian production helps stabilize the supply of vehicles and parts, while also supporting consumer confidence in locally built models. At the same time, heightened labour tensions raise the risk of production slowdowns that could affect dealership inventories.
