Wealthy car buyers choose practicality over pomp

Wealthy-car-buyers-650The Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle among wealthy Americans, according to analysts at Edmunds.com.

The U.S. car shopping site examined 2016 new car registration data from Polk and found that the car shopping habits of those who make more than $250,000 a year aren’t all that different from everyone else. It turns out people in all income brackets choose practicality over pomp.

The Ford F-150’s popularity is consistent with the rest of the new car buying public, said Edmunds.com. Also on the top 10 of everyone’s list are the Honda Accord and CR-V.

The key differentiator between the wealthiest buyers and the general public is their preference for trucks and SUVs. Nine out of 10 of the most popular vehicles in the top income bracket are trucks or SUVs, compared to six out of 10 for all buyers.

“And they’re not just gravitating towards luxury brands,” said Edmunds.com Executive Director of Industry Analysis Jessica Caldwell, in a written release.

“Eight of the 10 most popular vehicles among these buyers are non-luxury vehicles. It suggests that affluent buyers are satisfied with the technology, utility and performance that mainstream brands have to offer,” she added.

While exotics from Jaguar, Audi, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Bentley dominate the list of cars with the highest share of wealthy buyers, purchases of these types of vehicles represent just 0.7 percent of the total — demonstrating that flash is the exception, rather than the rule.
