Toronto gets $5M from feds to install 500-plus EV chargers

The federal government will invest nearly $5 million to install more than 500 new electric vehicle chargers, including 40 fast chargers, across Toronto, Ont. The announcement was made by Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, on Feb. 28.

According to the news release, the chargers should be installed by December 2025. It is also worth noting that Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) has a Charging and Alternative Fuelling Station Locator that drivers can use to help support their shift to an EV.

“We’re making electric vehicles more affordable and charging more available where Canadians live, work and play,” said Wilkinson in a statement. “Investing in more EV chargers, including the over 500 that we announced (on Feb. 28) in Toronto, will put Canadians in the driver’s seat on the road to a strong, healthy net-zero future.”

The federal government is also supporting the deployment of a coast-to-coast-to-coast network of charging stations. These are setup along highways and in public places within communities, including on streets, in multi-use residential buildings, at workplaces, and for vehicle fleets. So far more than 43,000 EV chargers across the country have been deployed.

“As Canada leads the way in the EV supply chain, we’re creating economic opportunities and sustainable jobs across the country,” said Julie Dzerowicz, Member of Parliament for Davenport, in a statement. “Transitioning to electric vehicles not only saves money but also reduces pollution, contributing to our national targets for zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.”
