Survey reveals knowledge gaps on how to measure, set correct tire inflation level

A new Leger survey for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada reveals that, although 77 per cent of consumer respondents understand that correctly inflated tires improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, knowledge gaps remain around how to measure and set the correct tire inflation level.

Those knowledge gaps are particularly elevated among younger drivers, who are more likely to buy an electric vehicle. Data from the survey shows that 62 per cent of respondents are aware that proper tire inflation plays an important role in optimizing EV range, and that 36 per cent of drivers are now eyeing an EV as their next purchase. That rises to 48 per cent for drivers aged 18 to 34.

“Canadian motorists are well aware of the crucial role tire maintenance plays in optimizing efficiency and EV range,” said Carol Hochu, President of TRAC, in a statement. “However, our findings reveal a pressing need for more education about how to do tire care right. This is especially true among younger drivers, who show a heightened interest in EVs, but lack essential tire maintenance knowledge.”

Hochu also highlighted the importance of empowering rivers with the knowledge to keep their driving journeys both efficient and safe. “Tire maintenance is one of the simplest and fastest car care tasks drivers can perform to keep their vehicles and families safe on the road,” she said.

It is also an opportunity for dealers to educate consumers about the importance of proper tire inflation and the benefits for both gas and EV drivers, which could potentially see more drivers including adding these checks when booking service appointments.
