Ontario legislature passes “pro-auto” Bill 162

Get it Done Act Bill 162 successfully passed third and final reading in the Ontario legislature, a move that has garnered praise from the Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario (MVRO).

The passing of Bill 162 means road tolls can now only be implemented through legislation, rather than regulation. There will also be a permanent freeze on driver licence and photo card fees, which will save drivers money while automatic vehicle permit renewals should save them time.

“Ontario’s 1,100 new car and truck retailers are extremely pleased Bill 162 has now passed,” said Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations for the MVRO, in a statement. “This will protect drivers from higher vehicle costs like road tolls and increased driver’s licence fees.”

Notte said the MVRO is also appreciative of Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria for pushing Bill 162 across the finish line. “His actions will result in meaningful cost savings for families and businesses,” said Notte.

Bill 162 also gives the public a say over future provincial carbon pricing, as it mandates that a referendum must take place before a future provincial government can implement carbon pricing.

As for increases in cost-of-living, Notte said that banning new highway tolls, freezing license renewal fees, and fighting the carbon tax will help make life more affordable for everyone. “Keeping vehicle ownership costs low is critical to supporting the auto sector and protects the family budget from higher transportation costs. Bill 162 supports both of these important goals.”
