Survey points to burgeoning interest in EVs since March: TrueCar

Ahead of the opening of the Detroit Auto Show, TrueCar updated a survey performed in March 2022 and found a significant increase in interest in electric vehicles across the U.S. over the time period. The continued growth shows that consumers are becoming more comfortable considering an EV for their next vehicle, though range anxiety and cost concerns are still a factor.

“Consumers across the nation are showing a growing acceptance toward considering an EV as their next vehicle purchase,” said Mike Darrow, President and CEO of TrueCar. “Since March 2022, the percentage of consumers reporting they would consider an EV as their next purchase grew from 52 per cent to 59 per cent.”

While EV considererers went up seven per cent, EV rejectors (those who would never consider an EV) went down by five per cent, from 24 per cent to just 19 per cent. More consumers now say they would purchase an EV if it met their range needs, up from 73 per cent to 77 per cent in the national survey. However certain areas of the country are not as on board with the EV revolution. The survey also focussed on the Greater Detroit Area and found considerably less enthusiasm.

“Our focus on Detroit area consumers showed a lower percentage of people willing to consider EVs as a next purchase,” said Darrow. “This might be attributable to the area’s strong ties to the auto industry and its love of performance vehicles or could be an indication that the middle of the country lags behind the coasts in its appetite for EVs.”
