Provincial new light vehicle sales continue to be varied, and notably so for September 2021, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC).
Total new light vehicle sales declined by 19.6% to an estimated 136,584 units sold in September, with all 10 provinces experiencing their own sales decreases for the month.
“Year-to-date was a different story and all provinces remained up relative to the pandemic hit (in) 2020,” said DAC.
But for September 2021, Prince Edward Island was down an estimated 11.2% and Nova Scotia was down 15.1%. Both witnessed the smallest decrease, while British Columbia and Ontario’s declines were more significant—down 15.9% and 18.4%, respectively.
“Given that the semiconductor shortage has hit full-sized pickups especially hard it was not surprising to see that Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Alberta had a difficult September with the microchip shortage being the dominant issue shaping the market as we close out 2021,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC.
Year-to-date P.E.I., Nova Scotia, and B.C. all maintained increases of 21.7%, 21.3%, and 20.5% over 2020, respectively. And Saskatchewan’s YTD sales were up 7.1% over 2020.
